Yet they are intimidated by people who exercise conscience rights, and therefore are determined to bring them down.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/calendar\/?year=1971&amp;country=1\">Monday, March 1, 1971<\/a>, the second of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Columbo_episodes#Pilot_episodes\">two pilot episodes<\/a>\u00a0was broadcast of what would become an extremely popular murder mystery series. The first of the pilots, &#8220;Prescription, Murder,&#8221; had been televised three years earlier, on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/calendar\/?year=1968&amp;country=1\">Tuesday, February 20, 1968<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_425\" style=\"width: 151px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-425\" class=\" wp-image-425\" src=\"https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Peter_Falk_-_1973-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"141\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Peter_Falk_-_1973-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Peter_Falk_-_1973.jpg 674w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Falk in 1973<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second pilot set the stage for the first of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Columbo_episodes\">nine seasons and 53 regular episodes of\u00a0<em>Columbo<\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbo_(season_10)\">plus 14 specials<\/a>. A total of nearly 35 years passed from the date the first pilot aired until January 30, 2003, when the final\u00a0<em>Columbo\u00a0<\/em>movie, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/columbo.fandom.com\/wiki\/Columbo_Likes_the_Nightlife\">Columbo Likes the Nightlife<\/a>,&#8221; was televised. The success of\u00a0<em>Columbo,\u00a0<\/em>of course, was tied directly to star Peter Falk, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=To2gyaczP9g\">made the character<\/a>\u00a0his own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing about the unforgettable detective and the series that bears his name, Gwen Ihnat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/10-episodes-that-show-why-columbo-is-the-most-iconic-tv-1798269898\">notes<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-426 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/columbo-cover-art-300x59.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"59\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/columbo-cover-art-300x59.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/columbo-cover-art.jpg 348w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Falk made the detective\u2019s underdog appeal unforgettable. So much credit must be given to the way he completely inhabited the character; within an episode or two, viewers learned Columbo\u2019s every idiosyncrasy. Not just his trenchcoat, his cigar, and his car, but his stooped posture, his gestures, his tendency to pull random objects out of his pockets, and his unfailing politeness, even when speaking to a party he knows is guilty. Unlike gritty cops of the era, he didn\u2019t even carry a gun. Falk described the character in his 2007 autobiography (<em>Just One More Thing<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<\/em>the title adapted from Columbo\u2019s personal catchphrase) as \u201ca guy with a mind like Einstein who sounded like the box boy at Food Giant.\u201d Falk hand-selected Columbo\u2019s permanent wardrobe\u2014including the legendary raincoat as well a tie and shoes from his own closet\u2014and picked out the beat-up 1959 Peugeot 403 convertible right out of the lot. All of these elements fleshed out this original character in a wholly three-dimensional way, creating an irrepressible, relatable everyman.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Columbo \u2014\u00a0<\/em>The Second Pilot Episode<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_427\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-427\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-427\" src=\"https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/columbo-ransom-for-a-dead-man-02-768x580-1-300x227.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/columbo-ransom-for-a-dead-man-02-768x580-1-300x227.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/dev5.myvtd.site\/wordfoundations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/columbo-ransom-for-a-dead-man-02-768x580-1.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Columbo \/ Ransom for a Dead Man<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second pilot episode was titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0066933\/plotsummary\">Ransom for a Dead Man<\/a>.&#8221; In it, Leslie Williams, played by Lee Grant, fatally shoots her husband, disposes of his body, and attempts to make his disappearance look like a kidnapping. The ruse was complete with a ransom note, a telephone call from the &#8220;kidnapper&#8221; that included a brief statement from Leslie&#8217;s husband (a short, prerecorded message coming over a perfectly timed phone call made possible by the latest technology), and instructions about where to drop the money. Leslie has to sell assets to raise all of the $300,000 demanded, and in doing so she manages to grab hold of the lion&#8217;s share of her dead husband&#8217;s wealth. A pilot for small aircraft, she flies over the drop-off point and tosses out an empty handbag that is supposed to contain the money. The cash actually is hidden away in an identical handbag she discretely exchanged for the empty one before taking off in the plane.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Spoiler alert!<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>If you haven&#8217;t seen this episode, I need to warn you that the following will give away important plot details.<\/em>Leslie has a stepdaughter, Margaret (Patricia Mattick). Margaret has been overseas attending a boarding school. She returns for her dad&#8217;s the funeral and soon suspects Leslie has murdered her father. Of course, Margaret is angry, and she is very open with with her stepmother about what she believes. Margaret boards the plane, and a few moments later, Leslie encounters Lieutenant Columbo. He is reading a newspaper and waiting waiting to talk to her. Did it ever occur to you that there are very few people that would take money to forget about a murder? It didn&#8217;t, did it? I knew it wouldn&#8217;t. No conscience. Limits your\u00a0imagination. You can&#8217;t conceive of anybody being any different than what you are. And you&#8217;re greedy. Furthermore, as\u00a0 Columbo indicated, the person can&#8217;t imagine or recognize a conscience possessed by another, let alone respect it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>He that hath a blind conscience which sees nothing, a dead conscience which feels nothing, and a dumb conscience which says nothing, is in as miserable a condition as a man can be on this side of hell.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u2014Patrick Henry\u2014<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The Conscience: A Biblical Perspecitve<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Testament tells us some very important information about the human conscience. Go\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordfoundations.com\/three-witnesses-that-testify-to-the-guilt-of-every-individual-before-god-as-seen-in-romans-214-16\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a brief discussion of three specific elements in these verses that testify that every individual is guilty before a holy God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Third,<\/strong>\u00a0the command that Christians submit to governing authorities is directly tied to God&#8217;s law \u2014 His absolute standard of right and wrong. It is the duty of government to reward those who do right and to punish those who do wrong, and the standard by which they mete out commendations and punishments is to be God&#8217;s standard. Yet believers must be mindful of other believers who\u00a0<em>do<\/em>\u00a0believe that activity is wrong. No Christian should exercise his or her freedom to do a particular thing if it leads another person who thinks it is wrong to do it. In other words, they were transparent and authentic, seeking to persuade people in legitimate ways, ways that did not manipulate. Their authenticity was so evident their hearers knew that Paul and the members of his team were the real deal. Thus, Paul and the others didn&#8217;t manipulate the consciences of their hearers (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Cor.+4%3A2&amp;version=NKJV\">2 Cor. 4:2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sixth,<\/strong>\u00a0engaging effectively in spiritual warfare involves exercising faith and a good or clear conscience. Rejecting these will lead to disaster and severely hinder one&#8217;s ability to fight against evil (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Tim.+1%3A18-19&amp;version=NKJV\">1 Tim. 1:18-19<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Seventh,<\/strong>\u00a0leaders in the church must have clear consciences (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Tim.+3%3A8-9&amp;version=NKJV\">1 Tim. 3:8-9<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Eighth,<\/strong>\u00a0a person&#8217;s conscience can be manipulated, damaged, and effectively eliminated (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Tim.+4%3A1-2%3B+Titus+1%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\">1 Tim. 4:1-2; Titus 1:15<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theologian John A. Whitmer offers a succinct summary of the New Testament&#8217;s teaching about the conscience in this paragraph. Here he is using the New International Version in his citations of various Scripture passages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\">Conscience is an important part of human nature, but it is not an absolutely trustworthy indicator of what is right. One&#8217;s conscience can be &#8220;good&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+23%3A1%3B+1+Tim.+1%3A5%2C+19&amp;version=NIV\">Acts 23:1; 1 Tim. 1:5, 19<\/a>) and &#8220;clear&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+24%3A16%3B+1+Tim.+3%3A9%3B+2+Tim.+1%3A3%3B+Heb.+13%3A18&amp;version=NIV\">Acts 24:16; 1 Tim. 3:9; 2 Tim. 1:3; Heb. 13:18<\/a>), but it can also be &#8220;guilty&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Heb.+10%3A22&amp;version=NIV\">Heb. 10:22<\/a>), &#8220;corrupted&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Titus+1%3A15&amp;version=NIV\">Titus 1:15<\/a>), &#8220;weak&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Cor.+8%3A7%2C+10%2C+12&amp;version=NIV\">1 Cor. 8:7, 10, 12<\/a>), and &#8220;seared&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Tim.+4%3A2&amp;version=NIV\">1 Tim. 4:2<\/a>). All people need to trust the Lord Jesus Christ so that &#8220;the blood of Christ&#8221; might &#8220;cleanse [their] consciences&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Heb.+9%3A14&amp;version=NIV\">Heb. 9:14<\/a>).<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Rights of Conscience<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the biblical worldview that they held, America&#8217;s Founding Fathers recognized the reality of an individual&#8217;s conscience, as well as every person&#8217;s duty before God to do what was right. Accordingly, they affirmed and upheld conscience rights in and for the new nation (go\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordfoundations.com\/2021\/07\/20\/primer-on-rights\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordfoundations.com\/2016\/12\/01\/thanksgiving-in-america-101-part-2\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is no surprise that a recognition of conscience rights as legitimate and unalienable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wallbuilders.com\/biblical-christianity-origin-rights-conscience\/\">is rooted<\/a>\u00a0in biblical Christianity. Nor can it be a surprise that when a nation abandons the God of the Bible (as America has), its recognition of conscience and conscience rights goes out the window.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Seared with a Hot Iron&#8221; and &#8220;Corrupted&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is the stark truth. Our nation has become like Leslie Williams. No conscience. Furthermore, even though unalienable rights such as rights of conscience are guaranteed in the US Constitution, these are being thoroughly trashed for the everyday citizen. The left is morally bankrupt and blind, essentially incapable of recognizing and respecting the\u00a0consciences of those who still espouse a sense of their own responsibility before God to live pure lives and to do what is right. There&#8217;s more. Leftists cannot abide\u00a0<em>any\u00a0<\/em>reminders of human accountability to God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These realities provide fertile ground for millions in this country to act immorally and unethically, and without any kind of transcendent framework to keep wrong behavior at bay. Remember that during the summer of 2020 &#8220;peaceful&#8221; protestors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordfoundations.com\/remember-the-peaceful-protests-of-2020\/\">burned down cities and killed many innocent people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Why are leftists running roughshod over the conscience rights of ordinary citizens? In part because they cannot abide<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>any\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>reminders of human accountability to God.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this mix, the people who refuse to violate their consciences stand out. They are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordfoundations.com\/2021\/07\/15\/completely-arbitrary-part-2\/\">people<\/a>\u00a0like Barronelle Stutzman, Jack Phillips, and Tom and Nancy Rost, to name just a few. Hopefully, even if it is on a less public stage, you and I also are living according to, not just our consciences, but the laws of God that human consciences uphold when they operate as they should. These laws are not up for negotiation or debate, and they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordfoundations.com\/2020\/09\/10\/avoiding-ethical-quicksand-and-helping-members-of-the-next-generation-avoid-it-as-well-part-5\/\">include the Ten Commandments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s look again at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Tim.+4%3A1-2%3B+Titus+1%3A15&amp;version=NKJV;NIV\">passages<\/a>\u00a0we cited above in the eighth item.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Tim.%204%3A1-2&amp;version=NKJV;NIV\">1 Timothy 4:1-2<\/a>, Paul wrote this to Timothy, his prot\u00e9g\u00e9 who was a pastor: &#8220;Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,\u00a0speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Titus%201%3A15&amp;version=NKJV;NIV\">Titus 1:15<\/a>, the apostle shared this observation with Titus, another friend who, like Timothy, was a pastor: &#8220;To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled&#8221; or &#8220;corrupted&#8221; (NIV).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/g2743\/kjv\/tr\/0-1\/\">Here<\/a>\u00a0is some of the information available at blueletterbible.org about the word translated &#8220;seared with a hot iron&#8221; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Peter%205%3A8&amp;version=NKJV\">1 Pet. 5:8<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>We must remember that &#8220;we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%206%3A12&amp;version=NKJV\"> 6:12<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Accordingly, we must guard against being led by &#8220;philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Col.+2%3A8&amp;version=NKJV\"> 2:8<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>We must understand that &#8220;though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Cor.+10%3A3-5&amp;version=NKJV\">2 Cor. 10:3-5<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Thus, we must engage in this and every spiritual conflict using the &#8220;whole armor of God&#8221; (see<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians+6%3A10-18&amp;version=NKJV\"> 6:10-18<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Second,\u00a0<\/strong>we have to resolve that we will not be intimidated by those who have no conscience and who refuse to recognize or respect our consciences or our rights of conscience. This means we will say with the psalmist,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\">In God (I will praise His word),<br \/>\nIn God I have put my trust;<br \/>\nI will not fear.<br \/>\nWhat can flesh do to me? (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+56%3A4&amp;version=NKJV\">Ps 56:4<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Third,<\/strong>\u00a0we must exercise our rights of conscience, living before God in ways that, to the best of our ability to determine, please Him. This means living according to God&#8217;s law and upholding and doing what we know to be right, even when it is costly. At every opportunity, we need to remind our fellow Americans that conscience rights are God-given. They are not created by the government; instead, government is\u00a0<em>obligated<\/em>\u00a0to recognize them and respect them. We cannot stand alone; we must stand shoulder to shoulder. This is what the church does when it is operating as it should.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fifth,<\/strong>\u00a0we pray. Our stands for what is right may win some over, and when they do, we will rejoice. God has to engineer this; we cannot. For our part, we do our best, with divine help, to cooperate with the Lord to show everyone how following His law gives true liberty. We ask God to use us to encourage all people abandon their own ways and follow Him instead. Not everyone will respond positively, but some will.<\/p>\n<h3>The Bottom Line<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may appear that those without consciences have the upper hand and will prevail in the end, they will not. Remember that it was a lack of conscience that brought down Leslie Williams.
